If not for a chance remark from my sister, an avid walker, I might never have known about the existence of the Capital Ring, a multi-part walking route that runs for almost eighty miles around Central London. As soon as I heard about it, of course, I knew that I had to try to walk at least part of it.

Following her recommendations, I began with Section 7, which runs from Richmond to Osterley Lock, along the banks of the Thames and the Grand Union Canal. It's an easy walk that takes only a few hours, so as soon as I reached Osterley I decided to press on and see if I could do Section 8 as well before it got dark.
