In 2001, I was still living in Paris. Some time in the mid-afternoon I happened to glance at a news site and read that two aircraft had struck the World Trade Center and the Pentagon had been hit by what was thought to be a rocket. M., a native New Yorker, happened to be staying with me at the time. I called her and told her: "This looks very serious. You should call your friends and family."

Check-in

Patan, Nepal -- 04 September 2011 | Permalink

"Want a handiwipe," said M., "so you can clean yourself up before we check in to a nice hotel?"

"It's going to take more than a handiwipe," I muttered, scrubbing at my palms. The taxi driver stared inscrutably forward at the chaos of the Kathmandu ring-road.

The bus wrangler was a young man with a wispy beard who looked as if no one had ever respected him in his life. He also had a seating chart and a mission: the bus wasn't going anywhere until everyone was sitting in the seats shown on their ticket.

The passengers had other ideas. The tourists simply ignored his efforts to get them into their assigned seats, while the Nepalis mocked him openly. He raged ineffectually for a little while longer and then gave in.

M. groaned. "If they're letting people on without luggage," she said, "This is the chicken bus, not a tourist bus."

"So what do you think it is?" said M. Ahead of us, a line of stopped vehicles - trucks, buses, cars and motorcycles - stretched from a little above the bridge to the crest of the hill and possibly beyond. Drivers and passengers milled around in the road.

"Landslide, accident ..." I speculated. I wondered how long it would take to clear the road, and whether there was any way around. It didn't seem likely. The Prithivi Highway - two narrow lanes of mostly decent blacktop - is the only major route connecting Pokhara to the Kathmandu Valley. Any other roads in the area were likely to be packed dirt at best, and the terrain was rugged enough that I doubted there was much redundancy in the road network. The chances of finding a back way that would conveniently bypass the unknown obstruction looked slim indeed.
