When you're preparing for a vacation, there are certain things that you don't want to read in the news. One obvious one would be that your destination is Ground Zero for a potential pandemic. A second would be that the place where you are going has just been the scene of civil disturbances, including major anti-government protests and mass arrests (although it was fun to see our friend E. getting quoted in an article calling for the Malaysian government to play nice).

On another note entirely, you don't really want to check your itinerary and discover that the airline has unilaterally decided to cancel one leg of your trip — without informing you. It's a good thing that I did check, otherwise I'd be seeing a lot more of Delhi than I really wanted to.

All in all, good times. Nevertheless, here I go …
